Custom Domain
Learn how to set up a custom domain for your Votonic community
Overview
Custom domains allow you to use your own domain name for your Votonic community instead of the default subdomain.votonic.app URL. This provides a more professional and branded experience for your users.
Prerequisites
- A Votonic Premium subscription
- A domain name that you own and can configure DNS settings for
Setting Up a Custom Domain
- Navigate to your community's Settings page
- Select the "Custom Domain" option from the settings menu
- Enter your domain in the URL field (e.g.,
feedback.yoursite.com
orfeedback.com
) - Click "Save" to register your domain with Votonic
Configuring DNS Records
After saving your custom domain in Votonic, you'll need to configure your domain's DNS settings:
- Log in to your domain registrar or DNS provider (e.g., GoDaddy, Cloudflare, Google Domains)
- Add a CNAME record with the following settings:
- Host/Name: Your domain or subdomain (e.g.,
feedback
or@
) - Value/Target:
custom.votonic.app
- TTL: Use default (usually 3600 or 1 hour)
- Host/Name: Your domain or subdomain (e.g.,
DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate, though most changes take effect within a few hours.
Verifying DNS Configuration
Votonic automatically checks your DNS configuration every 10 seconds after you save your custom domain. The settings page will show:
- A success message with green checkmark when properly configured
- Configuration guidance if your DNS settings aren't correctly set up
Reverting to Default Subdomain
If you need to remove your custom domain:
- Go to the Custom Domain settings page
- Click the "Reset to Subdomain" button
- Confirm the action in the dialog that appears
Your community will immediately revert to using your original .votonic.app subdomain.
Troubleshooting
If your custom domain isn't working:
- Ensure your CNAME record points to
custom.votonic.app
(including the trailing period) - Check that you've set up the record for the correct subdomain
- Wait for DNS propagation to complete (up to 48 hours)
- If problems persist, contact your domain registrar to verify your DNS settings
Some DNS providers require different formatting for CNAME records. If you're having trouble, consult your provider's documentation.
